Magnificent sunset, street fight and leaving for Quito

Got up late. I had this great steak meal for dinner and met up with Marita and Kristian randomly at a restaurant while walking back to the hostel. We strolled around the beach and got to see this breathtaking sunset. Close to the shore, fishermen were unloading the catch of today while hordes of pelicans where flying by only to dive like a canon ball straight from the sky and into the water to catch some fish. In the background the sun soon turned into a small red disk that fast, but steadily dipped into the ocean at the horizon [...] Read more

Birthday bash

The next day we cruised to two beaches. I bought myself some new flip flops as I broke my old ones in Costa Rica. Then I went for a nice lunch at the beach. At the restaurant I got to know this German waitress, who happende to live at our hostel(!) It was Saturday and I fixed some alcohol for the nights party. We did a pre-birthday party at our hostel with beer, Baileys and some local liquor. But what really got the party started, was when I cracked open a bottle of champagne.[...] Read more

Venezuela – ridin’ dirty

We wanted to explore most of Isla Margarita and decided that it would be fun to do this by cruising around with each little scooter. After talking to heaps of people on the island (Isla Margarita), it appeared that we had to go back to Porlamar to get a hold of a scooter as all the rental offices were located here. We went by bus to Porlamar, but it turned out that none of the companies we visted rented out scooters (a few had scooters a while ago, but discontinued this service). A little bummed out, we decided to rent a car instead. We got a pretty good price – about 150 bolivars for 24 hours and 20 extra per hour if we needed a couple of hours the next day. Considering that we were three people splitting the costs, this was a pretty sweet deal. We got a yellow little bugger and drove off. [...] Read more

Venezuela – Juan Griego

After checking in, we took a taxi to Playa Caribe where we got a free beer at a restaurant next to the beach since we stayed at Patricks place. Nice! The beach was beautiful, but the water was for some reason a bit cold (around 20 degrees I think). After realxing in the sun for a couple of hours we went back to Patricks. In the evening I met some cheerful locals and we played some rounds of pool. These guys only knew about ten English words so the conversation was rather sparse, but we had heaps of fun and as they bought me five beers. A good night! [...] Read more

Venezuela – Isla Margarita

Got up really early and took a plane from San Jose to Caracas in Venezuela. Decided to take another plane asap to Isla Margarita. We had a hard time withdrawing cash from the local ATMs at the airport until we figured out that we had to use the two first digits on the back of our credit cards (depending on the bank, in some cases parts of the CVC code) to complete the transaction. We finally got some cash, but could only withdraw 500 bolivars (turned out to actually be 500 000, but the last three digits had been eliminated in an attempt to overcome the massive inflation) [...] Read more
