Guatemala – Lake Atitlán, San Pedro & San Marcos

the view from our room in San Pedro

Today I got my camera back fixed, bright, shiny and ready for action (300CHK)! Jumped on a shuttle bus to San Pedro(50CHK) – a small town next to Lake Atitlán. The only way to describe San Pedro is a small hippie town that had a bit too many American tourists. It is just a couple of meters from the lake and you can rent kayaks, chill out in hammocks with a spectular view over Lake Atitlán or party it up in the few dodgy night clubs. Most of the places here play hardcore techno, but a few minutes walking from we stayed there was also a reggae club. [...] Read more

Guatemala – Antigua & Pacaya vulcano

After a short walk throught the city, we took a shuttle bus to the Pacaya vulcano (1h30m). Pacaya rises to an elevation of 2552m. The trip was incredibly cheap; 50CHK and 40CHK park fee. We walked up towards the summit (1h35m). At the top we were met by melting lava as Pacaya was having a minor eruption. The heat was overwhelming! We walked around the crater while huge burning and glowing rocks the size of a car wheel came tumbling down from the hot lava stream. [...] Read more

Guatemala – Tikal & Flores

I would recommend travellers to invest the little extra cash to book a full fledged bus trip at the dock in Belize City directly to Tikal (30USD). We learned that very little money were saved (about 60NOK) by arranging the transport ourselves. We ended up walking to the bus station from the dock (15-20min walk with all the luggage = heavy), then we grabbed a shabby bus to the border city, then continued with a cab to the border. Unfortunately we forgot a wallet in the taxi and had to go back to get it. Crossing the border costs 37.5BLZ (ca. 115NOK). We walked to the Guatemala border city center (10min walk). Warm and absolutely exhausted we took a minibus to Flores. From Flores we got a pirat taxi with charcroaches running around the car to Tikal (200CHK for 3pers). This ride took about 2hours and we arrived in Tikal 4.45pm and the park closed the entrance to the ruins at about 6pm. [...] Read more
